Indiana/ Illinois Move To Cut Perch Stock Losses
Commercial Fishing for Perch Banned in Lake Michigan Waters
Following Indiana by one day, Illinois' Department of Natural Resources Director Brent Manning moved to close commercial fishing for perch on Lake Michigan, and implemented a reduced sport catch and size limit for the prized pan fish, which has suffered dramatic declines since 1988..

Catch Rates for Chinooks Increase 60% Over Last Year
"Based on catch rates, the 1996 season on Lake Michigan was the best of the last eleven years", says Michigan's Great Lakes Creel Supervisor Jerry Rakoczy. "Angling for salmon as a group was 14.59 fish per 100 angler hours, up from 12.29 from last year, and the best since 1986 when the catch rate was 18.44 per 100 angler hours"..
