Warmwater Fish Hatchery and Research Station erected on the shore of Lake Erie

we're looking to build new $4 million facility along the waterfront.

Western New York may see a new Warmwater Fish Hatchery and Research Station erected on the shore of Lake Erie near Buffalo, if a dedicated group of Lake Erie supporters get their Christmas wish for next year.

Support and further discussion on the usefulness of such a facility resulted when lake scientists and other lake management personnel from New York and Ontario met at a Lake Erie information symposium in December of 1997.

The meeting, entitled "Lake Erie: The State of the Lake," in Blasdell, NY, was held in conjunction with USFWS and NY Sea Grant.

Organized by Assemblyman Dick Smith, the consortium of international research personnel and fisheries scientists provided a platform for common communication on pertinent Lake Erie issues, especially eastern basin Lake Erie issues.

Assemblyman Smith has sponsored the "Warmwater Hatchery and Research Facility Bill," looking to build new $4 million facility along the waterfront. Smith has developed an International Research Action Plan that calls for another meeting to convene on Mar. 25 and 26 in Niagara Falls with a panel of experts to identify research needs and fill information gaps.

Gill-Netters ask for Chub Harvset Increase

US Geological Survey data show, the chub future is as bleak as the perch, and recruitment and future of both are virtually non-existent

Because Illinois' commercial gill netters have been denied their questionable pursuit of happiness in taking any more perch, they've now turned their guns — make that gill nets — on the lowly chub.

They've asked Ill. DNR to increase their allowable chub quota to compensate for their lost perch business. As US Geological Survey data show, the chub future is as bleak as the perch, and recruitment and future of both are virtually non-existent.

The survey being conducted will determine the increased incidental catch and mortality of lake trout and salmon.

Since the inception of the study on July 11, 1996 a total of 92 lifts of chub nets has been monitored. During these lifts a total of 699,000 feet of gill net was observed (2,980 net-nights of effort) and 34,800 pounds (dressed weight) of chubs were harvested.

The incidental catch was comprised of a total of 4,425 lake trout of which 3,406 (77%) were judged to be dead and 121 chinook salmon of which 109 (90%) were judged to be dead.

Monitoring of the chub fishery has been extended through the end of June, 1998.

Three of the five licensees, Kogut Fisheries, Joe's Fisheries, and V Seeker Corp., harvested chubs during this four month period. A total of 0 chub lifts were monitored in March, one in April, 23 in May, and 21 in June. Chub harvest was 1,135 lbs. (dressed weight) in March, 1,350 lbs. in April, 7,445 lbs. in May, and 9,425 lbs. in June.
