2007 Season In Review

2007 found the Upper Niagara River and the Eastern Basin of Lake Erie once again living up to its growing reputation

as a world class fishery for trophy walleye, smallmouth bass, and muskie!   Throw in the acrobatic steelhead, deep fighting

lake trout or tasty perch, and what more could you ask for?

Walleye, arguably the most sought after gamefish on the Great Lakes were again plentiful.  The near legal fish of the previous

season came back in great numbers of 20-23” fish.  One of the beauties of Eastern Lake Erie is that you can catch your share

of the “eaters” and literally land a 10lb trophy on the next rod that goes off.    The smallmouth bass fishery, especially in May and June continued to be nothing short of spectacular.  Area boat ramps and hotels were frequently occupied by “out of state” bass anglers from all over the northeast, drawn by the countless reports of 100 fish days!   Perch fishing, especially out of Dunkirk and Cattaraugus Creek was very good, with many “jacks” finding their way from the lake to the frying pan.  Offshore, and later in the fall in Lake Erie tributaries, anglers encountered numerous steelhead as big as the mid-teens, whose fighting ability is unmatched.  Finally, no fishing report from this region would be complete with out talking about the large muskie in the Upper Niagara River and Buffalo Harbor.   2007 was no exception, with numerous reports of trophy muskie being landed, particularly in October and November.

The Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association membership can provide you with a wide range of fishing options, from small groups to multiple boats, from bass to walleye to muskie to trout!  Whether you are a beginner or experienced angler, why not come and spend a day or two fishing the trophy waters of Eastern Lake Erie with one of our captains?

Come on, let’s go fishing!
